In-Depth Details: Sour Diesel Strain Profile
The Sour Diesel strain is a classic strain that has been reigning supreme since back in the 90s. This 90% sativa-dominant hybrid is a cross between the Super Skunk and Chemdawg strains, though there is a little bit of speculation surrounding where the strain originally came from and who originally bred it. Regardless, the strain's genetics have been perfectly preserved for over 30 years due to its excellent mix of effects and unique flavors.
Sour Diesel checks in at a massive 19-26% THC, which is on the high end of the spectrum for classic strains that tend to hover around 10-15%. However, even though the strain tests high, its won awards due to its balanced effects that are very helpful without becoming overwhelming. The presence of therapeutic terpenes like b-Caryophyllene, Myrcene, and Limonene promote additional effects and are largely responsible for the calm, clear-headed high and gentle physical effects that make the strain so popular among medical patients. Some sativa strains cause users to feel racy or anxious, but these mellow terpenes help the strain stay balanced and gentle while it energizes you gently.
These terpenes are also responsible for the way Sour Diesel smells. The strain boasts b-Caryophyllene, Myrcene, and Limonene which add up to the sour, earthy, and citrusy aroma profile. Living plants tend to take on more fresh, herbal notes, though when the buds dry they become quite earthy and pungent. In some cases, they can smell a little skunky. As the flowers are ground up, they release a very powerful sour lemon aroma and a fuel-tinged spice typical of many strains from the Chemdawg family.
The flavors are quite similar to the aromas, though the flavor is a little more refined. The first impression is of a rich, skunky sweetness that envelopes the mouth with a rich, dank, and earthy smoke. This sensation is on the thicker and richer side, making it likely for Sour Diesel to make you cough. However, the final aftertaste is very fuel-forward, with a dank and sour citrus aftertaste.
As you exhale the final puff of the Sour Diesel strain, you'll notice the effects taking hold quickly, but not aggressively. Sour Diesel is a bonafide medicinal strain thanks to its mellow high and great mix of effects. You'll first feel the strain in your head, wicking away any symptoms of headaches or migraines as it soothes your mental state into one of gentle uplifted happiness. Then comes a gentle energetic jolt that breeds creativity and deep-seated euphoric bliss. As you enjoy the mental effects, Sour Diesel makes its way through your body and into your limbs, soothing away minor aches and pains and nausea, allowing you to get the most out of your day in a positive and mellow headspace.
Even though Sour Diesel offers balanced effects, the strain is best used during the day. The mental effects may lead to chattiness or the urge to stay busy, so it isn't the best choice if you're trying to go to sleep soon. That said, Sour Diesel is great for symptoms of fatigue and depression which may slow you down from getting the most out of your day. It's also a great choice if you suffer from mood swings, chronic stress, depression, PMS, PTSD, and even anxiety in some cases. Sour Diesel makes a great addition to the medicine cabinet when you need daytime relief from headaches, nausea, and pain without feeling slowed down or in a mental fog common with indicas.
However, like most medical cannabis, Sour Diesel does come along with a few side effects like dry eyes and cottonmouth. In fact, Sour Diesel is notorious for cottonmouth, so keep some Gatorade on hand. Further, for those who are sensitive to THC or the cerebral effects of cannabis, the strain may cause anxiety. With that in mind, be sure to start with a low dose with any new strain to see how it will affect you before taking a normal dose. Cannabis is an excellent medicine for managing chronic symptoms, but it isn't a cure-all. It's just a safe, effective alternative for the treatment and management of many chronic symptoms.
All in all though, Sour Diesel is a great choice for Colorado Springs medical marijuana patients seeking relief from physical and mental ailments at nighttime. Its cannabinoid and terpene potencies along with its balanced effects make it one of the most popular choices when it comes to strains among patients who visit our dispensaries here in Colorado Springs.
The Epic Remedy's Sour Diesel Strain Review
Sour Diesel is another one of those strains that everyone has, though it seems to be a little bit different everywhere you go. While cultivation practices play a big role, there is a bit of counterfeiting involved when it comes to these classic cuts. Your Blue Dream, Durban Poison, and even Haze-type strains have been around for so long and been so popular for so long that sometimes the genetics in the strain your smoking doesn't match the truest versions from days passed.
Regardless, I think ours is the closest to legit I've seen in the Springs by far. True Sour Diesel is smelly and fuel-tinged, but its appearance is the true-tell. These buds were impressive. They grew compact, fragrant colas, and the buds themselves dry to that classic shade of yellow-green we've come to know and love from Sour D. More importantly though is the vibrant richness of those fiery red pistils. Sour Diesel contrasts so well with itself it's almost a crime. She was a star for the camera this week.
Even though the appearance is one of the most important aspects, you wouldn't have Sour Diesel without that classic, one-of-a-kind aroma. The scent on these buds is sinus tingling, to say the least. Very pungent and earthy, though also sweet and citrusy with those diesel-like notes throughout. Ultimately mouthwatering in scent and in flavor.
Sour Diesel is one of the strains I never really get tired of. It's a classic for over 30 years for good reason — It offers some extremely well-balanced effects. If you compare it to other nearly-pure sativas like Green Crack or even Durban Poison, Sour Diesel tends to trump (at least in my book!) for one soul reason: It doesn't make you racy. As much as I prefer sativas, there are some I flat out don't enjoy because they give you wacko energy and also brain fog. Sour D isn't like those. It'll absolutely energize and uplift you, but it won't make you uncomfortable since the high itself is exceptionally clear.
The clear high leads to a ton of mental relief. If you're having a super bad day at work, Sour Diesel will bring you back without decommissioning you from being high. It's great for a good attitude adjustment, but it's also helpful for combatting things like mood swings and PMS. I also like it for a good energy or creative boost if I wake up slow and struggle through my workout. Best of all, it provides a bit of relief within the body too. Sour Diesel is great for headaches, and I find myself smoking it frequently if I'm struggling to have an appetite due to stress or nausea.
