In-Depth Details: Headbanger Strain Profile
The Headbanger strain is a 70/30 sativa-dominant hybrid first propagated by Karma Genetics when they crossed the world-famous Sour Diesel with Biker Kush. The result is a potent cerebral powerhouse that has taken home several awards, including 1st place for best sativa at the IC 420 Growers Cup in 2016 and 3rd place for best sativa at the 2013 High Times Cannabis Cup. Headbanger checks in at a whopping 22-27% THC on average and contains high concentrations of Myrcene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene terpenes which all boost the effects of THC in a phenomenon known as the Entourage Effect, making the strain exceptionally medicinally valuable.
Headbanger is also quite the beautiful strain, though cultivating her is often a labor of love. The strain tends to need a little longer than the average strain to reach her full potential and often can't be harvested until 10-12 weeks. However, the wait is well worth it. She grows beautiful, broad water leaves on thick stalks in a standard hybrid fashion, though her flowers are what really make her shine. With time, Headbanger colas swell to massive sizes and develop lots and lots of resinous trichomes. Her colas can be broken down into many extremely dense, cone-shaped flowers. As they dry, they settle into a light green color with dark green and golden yellow hues throughout. Each bud is covered in a handful of bright orange and red pistils as well as a hefty helping of silvery-white trichomes which give the buds a frosty appearance.
With terpenes like Myrcene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene, you can wager that the Headbanger strain is also quite fragrant. While growing, the strain is notably pungent, skunky, and citrusy, though the scent refines quite a bit as the buds dry. Dry flowers take on a more fuel-forward aroma in addition to those earth notes. When the buds are agitated or ground up, they release some extremely sweet and sour citrus notes, similar to oranges, lemons, and pineapple. When the buds are burned, they take on an earthy, woody note with a diesel-forward kick.
The flavor of the Headbanger strain is quite similar, though even more refined than the scent. On an inhale, you'll be met first with those pungent earth notes and of course that sour diesel-like kick. The smoke itself is pretty rich, woody, and skunky, adding a ton of complex notes to the profile. Many people compare it to a campfire. However, the exhale brings some sweet relief with plenty of lemon, orange, and berry flavors, leaving behind a lasting impression of candy-like sweetness and a fuel-tinged sour flavor.
As you breathe out that first exhale, you'll begin feeling the Headbanger strain creeping up on you. It'll hit you square in the noggin with bright, uplifting cerebral energy that makes focusing a breeze, allowing you to comfortably create or go about your business in an upbeat headspace. The strain is notably euphoric and amplifies feelings of happiness. However, as you enjoy the effects, you'll notice a gentle body-buzz making its way into your limbs and appendages, washing away many physical symptoms, such as pain and discomfort. Many patients say Headbanger is the cream de la cream of medical cannabis strains for this great mix of effects that never become overbearing. However, some users do report that the strain may cause cottonmouth, dry eyes, or a huge case of the munchies. You should also keep in mind that the strain is pretty high in THC for a sativa, so if you're sensitive to the energetic and cerebral effects caused by sativas, you may experience some anxiety in higher doses.
These effects coupled with a higher than average THC potency (around 22-27%) along with therapeutic terpenes like Myrcene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene makes the Headbanger strain an excellent choice for medical marijuana patients. As a more cerebral strain, it offers intense relief from symptoms of depression, mood swings, fatigue, ADD/ADHD, and PMS. However, many patients swear by this strain for the management of many physical symptoms - specifically tummy troubles. Many patients use Headbanger for relief from nausea, gastrointestinal disorders, and even the inflammatory symptoms of Crohn's disease. The body buzz is also great for minor aches and pains, hypertension, muscle spasms, and headaches or migraines.
Just keep in mind that like most strains Headbanger may cause dry eyes and cottonmouth. Like many other sativa-dominant strains, if you are sensitive to the heady effects you may also experience anxiety in higher doses. Remember, cannabis is an excellent medicine for managing chronic symptoms, but it isn't a cure-all. It's just a safe, effective alternative for the treatment and management of many chronic symptoms. For general use, Headbanger is one of the best medical cannabis strains out there for medical marijuana patients in Colorado Springs seeking daytime relief. It's potency levels combined with its helpful body buzz and positive cerebral effects make the strain a popular choice among patients who visit our dispensaries here in Colorado Springs.
The Epic Remedy's Headbanger Strain Review
I haven't been covering enough sativas lately. With the weather and all, I figured I could use a little pep in my step this week, which is why I reached for the Headbanger strain in the first place. I wasn't sure what the heck it was or where it came from, but I was super excited to do the research and learn more, as well as try those bright, frosty buds I picked out from the shelves at our North Academy location.
I was impressed of course with the appearance. As you can see throughout this strain profile, Headbanger buds are stupid dense and mad sexy. They're frosty and brightly-colored so of course, they attracted the goblin in me. I thoroughly enjoyed photographing these flowers. They made my gloves super sticky while working with them, and they smelled just as pristine as they looked.
Headbanger has lots of sour citrus notes and fuel-tinged spice, similar to Sour D, but a lot more complex. The flavor is equally, if not much more complex, as so many different flavors make an appearance during the sesh. My mouth found a candy-like sweetness as well as lots of tropical fruit notes and sour fuel-like notes. The most interesting aspect of the strain though is definitely the rich smoke. It smells woody and spicy, but also earthy and piney amidst all of that lemon fuel. Super interesting smoke, to say the least.
The effects are where the strain truly shines though. It is notably sativa, and will definitely put some spring in your step. If you're dealing with the seasonal scaries and navigating depression, Headbanger is an excellent way to feel your best. It's a great uplifting choice, perfect for when you have some light tasks to manage during the day. It's very energetic, though. You will definitely feel just as sped up and upbeat as all those 80s headbangers, so start with a low dose at first if you're sensitive to sativas.
Headbanger crept up on me, actually. I noticed that cerebral energy right off the rip, but it does come along with a body high that takes some time to spread. It's very gentle and not overwhelming in the slightest, but it did provide me a lot of physical pain relief and made me incredibly snackish. That said, I can see why most personal reviews about the strain refer to the intense stomach and digestive relief.
All in all, the strain looks, tastes, and smells awesome but it also offers a ton of great effects for medical patients and general users. If you haven't had the chance to try some Headbanger for yourself, be sure to stop by any one of our three Colorado Springs medical dispensaries.
