In-Depth Details: Durban Poison Strain Profile

Durban Poison, a pure sativa, is a descendent of the South African sativa landrace that was first found in the Durban port area in South Africa. Crossed, backcrossed, and recrossed with itself for over 50 years, Durban Poison has become a beloved, inbred descendent of the first cut that was brought to the United States by Ed Rosenthal, the famous cannabis activist, back in the 1970s. Interestingly, the genetics have held up pretty well, leaving behind a potent and pure sativa that checks in at a whopping 17-24% THC.

The strain grows to pretty large sizes in standard sativa fashion, boasting skinny water leaves and long stalks for the colas. Rated easy to grow, Durban Poison throws an average yield of 1-3oz per square foot after about 9 weeks. The colas can swell to pretty large sizes and range in shades of light yellow-green and forest green. The colas can be broken down into many individual nugs which offer a heavy blanket of THC-rich trichomes and lots of orange to sand-colored pistils. When the flowers dry, they take on more of a muted green color, allowing the trichomes and pistils to give them a contrasting and glittery appearance.

While growing, Durban Poison plants emit a unique and pungent aroma including a bright herbaceousness and some dank earth tones. As the buds dry, they take on more of an earthy aroma, though they are interestingly quite sweet and almost candylike. However, they truly shine when they're agitated. Grinding dried flowers up releases lots of Myrcene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene terpenes, allowing for an earthiness to cut through the sweet, citury aroma, bringing forth subdued pine-needle notes. The smoke itself is notably woody and piney with a pungent sweetness throughout.

Durban Poison tastes a lot like it smells, though perhaps a little more refined. An inhale brings forth lots of those herbal notes, though it's also quite reminiscent of lemons and citrus fruit. The smoke itself is quite thick and sweet, almost guaranteed to make you cough with its richness. However, the aftertaste it leaves behind is nothing short of delicious, combining all the different flavors and leaving you with a sweet, piney, and earthy aftertaste.

As you breathe out your first exhale, you'll feel Durban Poison revving you up. Considered the espresso of cannabis, Durban Poison is like sativa-zilla. You'll first feel a potent, yet clearheaded cerebral boost that will have you feeling energized and amplified. This leads to an emotional euphoria, or more or less, a peace with being, without causing you to feel overly stoned. This experience can be a bit intense for the sativa-sensitive or for those lacking activities to keep their minds engaged, so newbie smokers should start with a low dose at first. This cerebral effect and blissful euphoria makes way for an upbeat attitude and amplifies happiness, creativity, and energy. It's a great choice if you're looking to wake up, clear your head, and get moving.

These effects, coupled with an above-average potency and therapeutic terpenes like Myrcene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene make Durban Poison one of the top cannabis choices for medical marijuana patients. As a potent sativa, it's a better choice for mental ailments, though the presence of CBD/CBN, though light, also make it medicinally valuable for physical ailments. Durban Poison is a great choice if you're seeking relief from things likes ADD/ADHD, mood swings, fatigue, depression, and stress as well as minor aches and pains, headaches, and nausea. Just keep in mind that this potent sativa is meant to keep you moving, so you'll see the best results when you smoke it during the day or while you have lots of activities to tend to.

Just keep in mind that like most cannabis strains, Durban Poison may come with some unpleasant side effects for some people. Cannabis affects everyone differently, but generally speaking you can expect to experience dry eyes and cottonmouth. However, in people with THC-sensitivities or sensitivities to the energizing cerebral effects of sativa strains may also experience anxiety or paranoia while using the strain. Always start with a low dose of a new strain to see how it will affect you before taking a normal-sized dose.

With that in mind, take care to remember that cannabis is an excellent medicine for managing chronic symptoms, but it isn't a cure-all. It's just a safe, effective alternative for the treatment and management of many chronic symptoms. For standard symptoms, Durban Poison is a great choice for medical patients in Colorado Springs seeking physical relief during the day. The strain's potency levels and above-average terpene content make it a popular choice among patients who visit our dispensaries here in Colorado Springs.

The Epic Remedy's Durban Poison Strain Review

Durban Poison is another one of those strains that you can find practically everywhere. While it's a landrace sativa strain, the genetics have been preserved well since the 70s and even improved for potency through selective breeding. The stuff on the shelves here at The Epic Remedy is a great example of the strain and its quality.

The chunky round buds I received in my eighth bag were impressive, to say the least. Each one was glittering with trichomes and producing a dank, sweet aroma with a hint of pine needles. Grinding the buds up released more of those pine terps, though the flavor was notably sweet and herbaceous. I could also taste something quite lemony, yet earthy in the aftertaste.

My experience with Durban Poison is that it's like an espresso. It's going to get you up and get you moving, cutting through intense brain fog and sleepiness and maybe give you the jitters. However, it's exceptionally clearheaded and won't cause a ton of mental impairment. It may put a rocket up your butt, but it isn't going to numb you. More or less, it won't give you that stoney feeling, but it will give you tons of energy and emotional euphoria so you feel more upbeat and carefree. It may make you feel anxious or paranoid if you're not in a great place mentally when you smoke it, because again, it doesn't numb you or make you stoned.

You'll definitely want to be busy if you're using Durban Poison, though. This is one of those sativas that are so strong the energetic boost can become overwhelming if you're not too careful. Luckily I had an entire house to clean, so I was able to feel that energetic euphoria and feel comfortable. That said, I don't personally recommend it at night. If you don't have something to physically do or keep you occupied, Durban Poison can at times become a little overbearing. Watching a movie just won't cut it, at least for me, as the mind tends to wander and the body needs to stay busy and all hell breaks loose from there.

Regardless, the strain comes with a ton of medical uses so long as you're on the move. It gave me notably cheery feelings for the duration of the high, blasting away some of the lingering feelings of depression I've been experiencing lately. When I'm depressed I tend to be a little anxious, though more in a physical sense and not a mental one. Typically it settles in my stomach and makes it hard for me to eat or drink water, so Durban Poison absolutely helped with that, relieving the tension and settling the nausea. As far as aches and pains go, there is no better daytime sativa than Durban Poison, too. Great choice for headaches and for muscle aches, too.

TLDR though, Durban Poison is a potently uplifting strain great for chasing the blues away and bringing some bright, cheery energy and creativity to your morning routine while also helping you feel some much-needed relief from both physical and mental symptoms. It looks, tastes, and smells great, too. If you haven't had the chance to try some of it for yourself, be sure to stop by any one of our three Colorado Springs medical dispensaries.
