In-Depth Details: Crystal Chunk Strain Profile
The Crystal Chunk strain can be a little tricky to come by. Some Colorado dispensaries carry it and others don't. One reason may be due to its mysterious genetics. Very little is actually known about the strain came to be, though it has quickly become a staple at our dispensaries for its excellent mix of effects that soothe away a variety of symptoms. We do know that Crystal Chunk is a 70/30 indica-dominant hybrid cross between Crystal and Deep Chunk. Crystal is a cross between White Widow and Northern Lights, which are both extremely sought-after strains in the medical cannabis community, and it blends the effects of both strains seamlessly. Crystal was then crossed with Deep Chunk, which is an Afghanistan landrace strain that has been around since the 1970s.
While many seeds were popped, one offspring of this cross was later named Crystal Chunk. Crystal Chunk is the phenotype that was able to grow and check-in at a whopping 20-25% THC. It offers a uniquely sweet, spicy, and earthy flavor profile that is sure to bring about some nostalgic feelings, as well as delight the senses.
The Crystal Chunk strain grows quite similarly to its Deep Chunk parent, growing in standard indica-dominant fashion. The strain offers broad water leaves and bushy compact growth that requires a fair amount of maintenance to encourage the best yields and resin production. That said, when all of her needs are met, Crystal Chunk dumps trichomes and resin. The flowers are incredibly sticky and frosty, and also quite dense and compact. Each nug ranges in shades of dark to forest green, though it isn't uncommon for the strain to throw shades of purple and deep, dark reds, too. You'll also find a heavy helping of electric orange pistils curling out from the trichome heads in all directions.
Crystal Chunk is a very aromatic strain, too. While she grows, the strain tends to have a uniquely pungent and dank aroma to it. The scent refines quite a lot when the flowers dry, though. Crystal Chunk can overpower a jar (or even a room) with its hashy, piney aroma. In some cases, it takes on a unique sweetness similar to chocolate and mint. As the strain burns, more of those earth tones are released, including notes of pine, wood, and earth.
The flavor of the Crystal Chunk strain is largely sweet and spicy. A good inhale will bring forth more of those natural flavors, like pepper, wood, and a semi-skunkiness. The smoke itself is pretty rich and creamy, though also fairly peppery and more likely than not to make you cough. The aftertaste is a lot more sweet and creamy, highlighting chocolate and mint notes as well as a dank and pungent earthiness. All in all, a unique, but flavorful experience.
As you exhale your first puff of the Crystal Chunk strain, you'll be immediately met with a sense of peace. The effects start in the mind, filling you with a deeply uplifting sensation that fades away to a comfortable euphoria, bringing forth notable feelings of happiness. However, the strain settles in the body quite heavily. After a few minutes, you'll feel the physical effects creep into all of your muscles and limbs, lulling you into a sense of deeply relaxed calm with its potent body buzz. In higher doses, the strain can make you feel pretty sleepy and sedated, perfect for an afternoon in or right before bed.
These effects paired with a slightly higher-than-average amount of THC (20-25% on average) make the Crystal Chunk strain a hall of famer in terms of medicinal value. Between its extremely medicinal lineage and its ability to soothe and relax the brain and body, many patients choose Crystal Chunk as a powerful nighttime medicine for stubborn symptoms. Crystal Chunk has many standard effects, like the ability to soothe away symptoms of chronic pain, muscle aches, depression, and stress, though it's potent body high works wonders for tricky illnesses, including ones that affect the stomach. The strain is a great choice for nausea and a lack of appetite, though it's also a popular choice for illnesses involving the lower GI tract, such as diarrhea, inflammation, IBS, IBD, and Crohn's Disease. While it won't halt these illnesses, it will make the symptoms much easier to manage. Crystal Chunk's indica-dominant effects also make it a great choice for battling insomnia and other sleep-related conditions.
Just keep in mind that like most strains, Crystal Chunk may cause cottonmouth, dry eyes, and couchlock. Cannabis is an excellent way to manage chronic symptoms, but it is not a catch-all cure and each strain affects everybody differently. For general use, Crystal Chunk is one of the best strains available for medical cannabis patients. It's above-average potency, powerful body high, and soothing mental effects make the strain a popular choice among patients that frequent our three Colorado Springs medical dispensaries.
The Epic Remedy's Crystal Chunk Strain Review
'Tis the season for indica-dominant peace. With the holiday craziness already in full swing, I've been leaning towards indica-dominant strains lately. As soon as the sun goes down, I too, go down. Like a sack of potatoes. Couch lock city, by 5 PM. It's been pretty awesome.
Crystal Chunk is the latest indica leaner I've had the opportunity to sample. We photographed it earlier this month and I had to grab some for myself after seeing the results. The strain is just gorgeous, throwing all sorts of colorful shades into the buds. However, each one was also super frosty and sticky.
I really appreciated the aroma of the strain first. I love me a good earthy strain and was super impressed with its pungent spicy aroma and sweet, chocolate, and mint forward flavors. It definitely made me cough, but that earthy, woody spice was absolutely mouth-watering.
Crystal Chunk had me vibing on the couch at 5 PM every single night this week. I actually really REALLY love this strain. While sampling it, I knew nothing about its genetic makeup or effects other than the fact that it was labeled indica-dominant but was still blown away by how effective and useful the strain was for a variety of symptoms.
As a medical cannabis patient myself, I'm always looking for a good, reliable strain to help me manage my symptoms. I suffer from a fair amount of pain in my shoulders and back, but I also deal with a lot of anxiety-induced stomach problems. I also tend to get super depressed the first few weeks after the time change in the fall. I've been leaning on this strain heavily to help me maintain a positive attitude when the sun goes down so early and have experienced great success with it.
On the other hand, it's excellent for anxiety. It shuts my panic-stricken brain up quickly so I can unwind and relax. I love that the mental effects are uplifting and highly euphoric so I can just zone out and find my chill. I also love the potent body high that soothes and relaxes my limbs. All in all, it offers the perfect mix of physical and mental effects that make it easy to de-stress and decompress, or fall asleep and stay asleep.
